Harmonize your body and mind for lasting wellness.

Acupuncture is a traditional form of medicine from China that encourages the body to promote natural healing and to improve function. This is done by inserting very fine, disposable needles into specific points along the body and possibly adding heat or electrical stimulation to the needle.

Chinese Medicine is often used in conjunction with acupuncture. Chinese herbs are sourced from plants, animals and minerals, and are used to treat a wide variety of illnesses or painful conditions. These herbs can help the body’s systems heal and work more efficiently.

Practitioners may also use tuina, cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, or nutrition and lifestyle coaching. Tuina (pronounced “twee na”) is a Chinese massage that breaks up adhesions between muscles that result from traumatic or chronic injuries. It includes the use of pressure on acupuncture points and along their channels, and assisted movement to restore normal joint motion. Moxibustion is a traditional heat therapy used to increase blood flow, improve immune function or deliver deep relaxation. Gua sha is a technique to promote normal circulation and to relieve pain, stiffness, cough, fevers and other complaints.

This ancient tradition brings relaxation and pain relief.

There are a wide variety of massage techniques, and massage therapy’s benefits are just as varied, from relaxation and stress relief to injury recovery and managing chronic pain. Massage therapy reduces muscle tension, stress and fatigue, and improves circulation.

The main styles of massage therapy are Therapeutic/Deep Tissue Massage and Relaxation/Swedish Massage.

**Therapeutic/Deep Tissue Massage**
This is a restorative, pain-relieving massage that’s often appropriate to help muscles heal after an accident or car collision. Although all massage treatments are therapeutic by nature, this massage goes beyond its Swedish base, bringing additional techniques, deeper pressure and specific focus to areas of the body that need extra attention. Deep tissue work is used, as well as stretching, passive range of motion, trigger point therapy, myofascial release and more.

**Relaxation/Swedish Massage**
This massage for relaxation brings a healthy balance to the body – it decreases stress and muscle tension, increases circulation and helps restore the mind-body connection. It’s what we think of as a traditional massage, incorporating soothing strokes that glide and knead. Pressure ranges from light to medium and oils or lotions are often used. Along with increased relaxation and circulation, this style of massage can be extremely effective in releasing areas of muscle tension and soreness.

Apex also offers a variety of other massage techniques, including craniosacral therapy, maternity massage and structural integration.

**Pregnancy Massage**
A pregnancy massage is much like a regular massage, but the therapist will be careful to avoid putting pressure on certain areas and will use unique positions to keep the mother comfortable and safe. For example, rather than spending the entire session lying face-down, you will be on your side or in a semi-reclined position. This avoids putting pressure on your abdomen and disrupting blood flow.

During a prenatal massage, the therapist will avoid using deep pressure on your abdomen and legs. Gentle pressure may be used, but deep pressure on your legs can cause problems if you have blood clots.

Hello, my name is Eleanor! I am an acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese Medicine, and I am excited to be joining the team at Apex Wellness Center. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about who I am.

I grew up in Detroit (Michigan, not Oregon!) and I chose to make Portland my home when I arrived over 20 years ago and fell in love with it. Since then, I have only grown to love this place more as I have explored the surrounding area through hiking and backpacking and put down roots. When my interest turned to Chinese Medicine, I felt fortunate that there were multiple great programs here in town to choose from and attended NUNM. I have been amazed at the potential for healing that Chinese Medicine possesses. I feel incredibly honored to be part of this process for my patients, guiding and supporting them on their unique journeys toward health and well-being. I integrate a variety of techniques, tailoring each treatment to the needs and preferences of the patient, from very gentle needling to more intense modalities like sa’am and orthopedic acupuncture. I also bring in complementary therapies such as cupping, moxibustion, qigong tuina (a form of therapeutic bodywork), and craniosacral therapy to help create a space of deep stillness and relaxation where the body can heal. Creating a Safe and Inclusive Healing Space Studying Chinese Medicine has given me a concrete framework in which to enact my deep empathy for others. It is essential to me that my practice reflects my values. I strive to cultivate a nonjudgmental and inclusive environment for all my patients, ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard, and respected. In addition, I incorporate contemporary approaches like body positivity and harm reduction into the ancient practices of Chinese Medicine, finding ways to keep the medicine rooted in its traditions while making it accessible and relevant to our modern world. Outside the Clinic When I’m not treating patients, you might find me practicing qigong, hiking or backpacking, baking, or spending time with my partner and friends. I also enjoy dancing, reading, and sipping tea in the company of a good book. These practices help me stay connected to myself and continue to replenish my energy so that I can be fully present for my patients. Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey and approach to healing. I am so grateful to be able to share this path with all of you, and I look forward to having the opportunity to support your health and well-being. Hope to meet you soon!

Warmly, Eleanor Jones Licensed Acupuncturist & Chinese Medicine Practitioner
